Plumbed-in water coolers are available as floor mounted free-standing models, table top models or unobtrusive undersink units. All water chillers use integral electrically powered refridgeration units to chill the water, with some models also supplying  unchilled water from the incoming cold mains or limited quantities of heated water for tea/coffee etc. Modern plumbed-in water chillers have many advantages over bottled water chillers, especially in higher demand situations:

• Bottled water costs approximately 30p per litre whereas plumbed-in systems can provide chilled water for a few pence per litre. 
• Plumbed in coolers draw water from the mains supply so there is no risk of running out of water even in a heatwave. 
• Plumbed in units are usually used in conjunction with in-line filters to remove unwanted tastes such as chlorine. 
• Re-ordering and physically exchanging heavy water bottles is not required. 
• There is no requirement to store bulky bottles (either full or when empty). 
• The environmental impact of producing and transporting bottled water is avoided. 
• Installation  is generally no more complex than a domestic appliance such as a washing machine.
