Solar water heating systems consist of solar panels (collectors), a pump station, a solar controller and a solar hot water cylinder. The system operates by using solar panels to absorb the heat from the sun's rays and use this to heat the heat transfer medium (a mixture of water and glycol). The fluid is circulated by a pump, the operation of which is controlled by the solar controller. The heated fluid circulates around a heat exchanger in an indirect hot water storage cylinder fitted with two heat exchangers (coils). The lower coil is heated by the solar circuit and the upper coil by an secondary heat source (typically a gas, oil or electric system boiler).
