Water heaters for hot drinks (tea, coffee etc) need to raise the temperature to nearly 100oC and a range of specially designed products is available for this purpose, ranging from simple manual fill catering urns to sophisticated wall-mounted and countertop water heater units. Domestic hot water from taps in bathrooms and kitchens is normally around 60oC. Water heaters for producing domestic hot water come in two types: instantaneous water heaters (water is heated on demand) and storage water heaters (water is pre-heated and subsequently drawn off as required). Instantaneous water heaters are compact and, by their nature, do not run out of hot water but provide relatively low flow rates and (for the majority of units which are rated above 3kW) need to be wired to the electric consumer unit. Storage water heaters units are often more suitable when significant volumes of hot water are required, for example to draw a bath. Storage water heaters are simpler to install electrically, although a little more complicated to plumb in. They are by far the most common type and are capable of providing high flow rates, but are physically larger and, although generally well insulated, do have some standby energy losses when not in use.
